Motorcycle Helmets

Motorcycles can be very dangerous vehicles if you do not take the right precautions when riding them. Some countries have very strict laws about what one needs to wear when you are riding a motorcycle but laws should not have to take the place of common sense. There is a wide range of motorcycle gear available for any person that regularly rides a motorcycle and while it is true that you do not need to protect yourself with as much aplomb as one of the professional racing riders, there is no reason to take unnecessary chances. Most people think that motorcycle protection ends with a motorcycle helmet, but that is far from the truth.

It is true that the motorcycle helmet is one of the most important parts of motorcycle safety gear. It stands to reason since the helmet protects, debatably, the most important part of the body – the head. There are many different styles of motorcycle helmet available out there today. In fact there is even a roaring business in customizing motorcycle helmets to suit the rider’s needs and personality. While a helmet can bring about many chances for individual expression, they still need to be used for their proper purpose – to protect the rider from accidents.

Motorcycle helmets come in three forms. The full helmet that most people are familiar with usually comes with a visor but some do not. The half helmet only covers the top of the head and while this does provide some protection, it is not really adequate for high-speed motorcycles. The three quarters helmet protects the head and the back of the head and neck. While providing more protection than the half helmet, it still leaves the face exposed. The half and three quarter helmets usually do not come with visors or other protection for the eyes from the wind while riding a motorcycle and a rider should have goggles or some other protection for this case.

While motorcycle helmets can be painted and customized, they still need to alert other motorists to the rider’s presence on the road. Studies have shown that bright colored helmets, especially white ones, reduce the chance of a collision by 24%. This does not mean that you should not customize your helmet, but you must keep in mind how visible you are to motorists. The same applies to other gear that a rider wears. The usual image of a motorcycle rider is all in black leather but someone in black leather on a black bike in the middle of the night is not very visible to other motorists.

Aside from the motorcycle helmets, riders need to look at their jackets, pants, gloves and boots. These pieces are usually made from tough, abrasive resistance materials like leather and Kevlar but they come in a wide variety of styles. Just because they have to be functional does not mean they are not fashionable. Then again, if you are placing fashion over safety then perhaps you should buy a car instead.
